Ok, I know blogging in my Germany blog two days in a row this far before I even leave for Germany is slightly ridiculous... However, I have to get this excitement out somewhere. It's distracting me from my German homework. (Which I happen to be a few days behind on...oops!)
A week or so ago, Calley (the other MU student studying in Tuebingen next semester) suggested a newish and cheap way to travel in Europe. She thought we should try couch surfing. She continued to explain,"basically, you travel around and sleep on people's couches. For free!" I thought that sounded good... if only I knew more people living in Europe. She then corrected me by informing me that you do not, in fact, know the people. You simply use the couch surfing website and find someone to stay with. Naturally, my first reaction was to freak out. Shut down the idea immediately! After all, that sounded like a perfect way to get murdered/robbed in the middle of the night! I tried to explain to Calley that youth hostels are the cheap and SAFE way to travel around Europe. "Yes, Courtney. But this is free. FREE!"
Well, I had pretty much forgotten about the whole couch surfing thing until a few days ago. I decided to research the organization a bit. The more I read, the more I gradually began to consider it.. Consider. Definitely not completely sold on the idea. But like I said, that was a few days ago.
This evening I spent several hours on the couch surfing site. I now have a profile and actually feel pretty enthused about it. It would be like having a host family for each town you visit! You can chat with the person before hand and see if it sounds like a decent match. Obviously, I would read all reviews about the person before I so much as message them. Now I'm pretty excited about it. (incase you somehow missed that) It seems like it may be the most fun (and definitely cheapest) way to travel!
